Works
System of Culture is an art collective founded by three members in 2017.
It is now continued as the artist name of Toshimitsu Komatsu.
Toshimitsu Komatsu was born in Tokyo in 1989 and graduated from the Department of Visual Communication Design at Musashino Art University.
Before forming the collective, he and his friends would spend late nights at family restaurants talking about films, TV dramas, and social media posts. Those casual conversations eventually led him to start creating still-life-based works in a room of his family home.
Major solo exhibitions include Exhibit 4 (CALM & PUNK GALLERY, Tokyo, 2022), Exhibit 6 (parcel, Tokyo, 2024), and Exhibit 8 Pieces of Narratives (MAHO KUBOTA GALLERY, Tokyo, 2025).
Awards include the Patricia Karallis Prize from the JAPAN PHOTO AWARD 2021 (2021) and selection for VOCA 2022: The Vision of Contemporary Art—New Perspectives on Painting (2022).
Publications include Book 1 (self-published, 2017), Book 2 (self-published, 2024), and Pieces of Narratives (United Vagabonds, 2025).
