Works

Born in Tokyo in 1978. After receiving a Diploma from Coláiste Stiofáin Naofa in Cork, Ireland in 2001, and a BA in Fine Art from the National College of Art and Design in Dublin in 2005, the artist began their practice based in Dublin.
In 2018, the artist relocated their studio to Kyoto for a period of one year. In addition to the influence of 17th-century Dutch painting, which had long served as a spiritual foundation for the artist, this time in Kyoto opened up a new mode of expression. Through the eyes of painters associated with Rimpa and Ito Jakuchu, the artist began to observe the seasonal flowers blooming under the eaves of Kyoto townhouses, and the subtle changes of the seasons.
In the series begun around 2016, in which objects are arranged on tabletops, Japanese elements and the aesthetics of traditional Western still-life painting are brought together in remarkable harmony. These works have developed into a more mature body of work, combining a delicate sensitivity to the seasons with the compositional strength of Western painting. In recent years, he has also presented large-scale installations exploring the relationship between traditional Japanese architecture and painting.
